The story I chose is “Still Alice” it depicts a woman who just turned 50 deal with a diagnosis of Early Onset Dementia. Upon listening to the first few chapters of the story, I was amazed at what Alice accomplished in her professional career and family life. Knowing that she was a Harvard Professor and knowing what was to come I had a deep pit in my stomach. She was such an educated and grounded woman. I stopped at the part where she got lost the first time 4 blocks from her house and thought “uh oh, here we go”. As I eagerly wait for the time to listen more, I can’t help but wonder if her professional career as a professor will help her understand how to remain as healthy as possible with this diagnosis.

Sounds like a really interesting book! I’m sure it can provide a lot of information about the disease as well!

Reading this blog post, my first thoughts are of my uncle. My uncle was also diagnosed with early onset dementia. He was only in his late 50’s when he started having symptoms. He was also very educated and had a wonderful professional career. He used to be an engineer. He was a very well put together man and was not very outgoing. Seeing him when he was further in the dementia was such a sad but interesting thing to see. You really do see the person deteriorate and act in ways they never did before. It is such a sad and heart breaking process to watch. I think it is interesting to see that no matter how educated you are, this disease can effect anyone. I am excited to follow your posts and to see how Alice handles her diagnosis.

Wow! Through reading your post, I can really feel your intrigue for what is going to happen with this character. I have watched this movie, and I remember the movie being so well done, you could really feel what the main character was going through. From what you saying in your first post, I feel the book is just as riveting if not more! Thank you for sharing, can’t wait to see the journey this book takes you on 🙂
